It seems that OpenOffice.org only distributes rpms for the i386 version of OpenOffice. To use the lastest version for amd64 it looks like we would have to compile from source and while I started that process it seemed to be quite a chore. What I ended up doing was setting up a Debian sid chroot (instructions at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebootstrapChroot) and installing openoffice.org version 2.2.1~rc1-1. I still saw the crash when trying to save the ppt you have provided.
