There are a couple of drive I use for alternate boot disk testing in
this system, they are not used in the setup that hangs.

At least once, I have had the system hang twice during a single boot.  I
got the busy box prompt, I typed "exit" and hit return. I got a blank
screen with a cursor in the center, and it stayed there until I blindly
typed "exit" and hit enter again, then I got the login prompt.
