** Description changed:
I have a macbook pro (5.5 I think) and since 10.04 it has been
impossible to set external video modes at a higher resolution than
640*480 which is rather annoying and makes using the laptop in linux for
presentations a big problem.
Anyway I have tried all the usual stuff - trying to force the resolution
in xorg.conf, tryng nvidia-settings and trying the nvidia xorg.conf
option"useEDID" "FALSE" but nowt seems to work.
I am convinced this did used to work (but I can't remember how) - I
previously had a separate problem with the screen turning off when
mplayer started in magicpoint that could not have occurred at such a
limited resolution [I never did get to the bottom of this]. IIRC the
useedid false option in xorg.conf used to allow you to set any
resolution but no longer.
This seems to be a widespread problem for this hardware (which works
fine in macosx)
I wouldn't know if this is X, nvidia, nvidia-settings or something else
that is at fault.
