I disabled Cool 'n Quiet from BIOS, modified xorg.conf to use nvidia and
restarted X
Nothing seems to have changed.
I still experience the following:
  * when gdm starts the screen is pitch black and the monitor seems to have
entered a sleep state (a little LED on the monitor blinks just as it does when
the screen is closed by power saving software.) Note that the sound ubuntu
makes when it displays the login screen is heared, even though I can't see
anything.
  * ALT+CTRL+Fx and then ALT+CTRL+F7 brings me to a normal gdm screen. As it is
first rendered I can see that this runs a bit slow: I can see how the screen is
filled with the login image, and then how if displays the static text label for
USERNAME and the text box in which I'm supposed to enter my username. This is
rendered in less than a second, but you can clearly see the elements changing
on the screen.
   * enabling Desktop Effects (Compiz is the default) freezes my system.
   * rebooted, the behaviour is the same as described above,
   * rendering pages in firefox, nautilus, Show Desktop all have the same kind
of different behaviour: they seem to work just as fine as with nv ( as in
firefox doesn't seem to block or something like it) just that you can see the
pages/windows getting rendered by elements.
