Well, the scanner works fine using 10.04.i386 I now think that it is not sane backend problems, these are well tested, it must be a kernel/module problem. I gave the scan1.log, and Michael Nagel has pointed out the important line; there are also things in the kernel.log files, but Ubuntu may have more important things to bother about.
