I'm pretty sure I have a fix for this now; thanks to Kate for providing
remote access to an affected system for debugging. However, rather than
risk making alpha-2 worse rather than better at this late stage, I'm
going to land it just after alpha-2. We'll release-note it, and on
affected systems it should be possible to upgrade the installer before
starting once a fix has been released.
