Hi there, did you give the proper arguments to scanimage? did you try xsane?
If this is not really bothering you, and would rather not spend some time working on this, it is probably not worth the trouble. That message is kind of misleading... If you are intersted in debugging the issue, that would be great, of course. First step is getting it to work with xsane and/or scanimage. Because if it does not work that way it either, it is very unlikely that is an issue with simplescan, but a problem with the sane backend.
