This happens to me using Ubuntu 11.10 Unity 2d. To recreate:
1. Open zsnes
2. Maximize the window using alt-Enter
3. Close zsnes. Now, it will try to open maximized and will crash.

To temporarily fix it, I specify to not open it in full screen. To do this, I
open a terminal, and type:
zsnes -v 2

Now it will work from the Unity launcher again until it is closed as a
maximized screen.
If that doesn't work, you can type:
zsnes -?
Look at the -v options for video mode and find one that works.

I don't know how to change the commands in the Unity launcher yet. I
think if I can figure out how, I can make it always open in a certain
screen resolution and not have this problem any more.
