Hi Denver, I have a sense you may have two separate bugs. Or, rather, the problems you mention are distinct and can be investigated separately. For this bug report let's focus on the X crash.
You mentioned that X crashed back to the login screen. That will almost always result in a terse backtrace written to the end of your /var/log/Xorg.0.log or /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old, however nether of those files attached to this bug report show that error. Please see if you can reproduce the crash and then collect the log file and attach it here. If it is crashing, what we need is a full backtrace. Directions for gathering backtraces are at http://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Backtracing. There were a number of bugs filed about X crash issues around the same time as yours, which were due to a bug in the -synaptics driver and fixed with xserver-xorg-input-synaptics 1.5.99~git20120220-0ubuntu3. So you might want to try updating first and verify you're still seeing the crash with that version installed. Regarding the 100% CPU bug, *typically* that is due to a client application rather than X itself. Sometimes xrestop can give a sense of what client apps are using lots of resources. Otherwise, just start randomly killing your X clients until the X cpu usage drops; whatever you last killed will be the wayward client. Then file a new bug against that program. Or, if you're still unable to narrow it down, post a new bug report against X to focus on that issue and we'll follow up from there. ** Package changed: xorg (Ubuntu) => xserver-xorg-video-ati (Ubuntu) ** Changed in: xserver-xorg-video-ati (Ubuntu) Status: New => Incomplete -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/933788 Title: X crashes or spins on occasion To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-ati/+bug/933788/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list [email protected] https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
