@Jo -- vt.handoff is an ubuntu specific feature which will be ignored on
a mainline kernel.  As you can just switch VTs to find the prompt I
suspect this is not a kernel issue; also handoff in general seems to be
working on a normal setup.  Adding a cryptsetup task as that package
supplies the initramfs bits.
