My guess was xserver because xorg.conf was ignored. But you're right. I just created a new user and logged in - everything was fine. So I'll delete my .kde4/ and make all my settings anew - but probably not today because I had a hard day at work and am a bit lazy now ;-) Thanks for the hint and my apologies to the xserver-people!
