Sorry not to have replied sooner; I had to dig up headphones.  The 
headphones do work (last time I don't think they did) and now the 
speakers do as well, although very faintly.  Manipulating levels in 
alsamixer helps somewhat.  Now I can't get the mutes in Sound 
Preferences to have any effect.  I'll try mucking around with the 
connections and alsamixer and see if I can borrow some other speakers to 
see if my speakers are old.

So for now, thank you for your help.  If I have to tweak something in 
/etc I'll be back.  :-{)}
