1. Please provide a video of the flicker if possible.
2. Please also try tweaking some radeon driver options in /etc/X11/xorg.conf:

Identifier "devname"
Driver "radeon"
Option "SwapbuffersWait" "on"

3. Try a workaround: In "ccsm", Workarounds, enable "Force full screen redraw
(buffer swap) on repaint".
4. The slowness you experienced with fglrx is bug 763005 which should be fixed
in compiz 0.9.7.0.
