I have been having very similar trouble with my Toshiba Tecra A2 - Eventually, I discovered this thread:

It is, i think, aimed at M200 tablet PCs but it worked okay on my Tecra. YMMV, no warranty is expressed or implied. Obviously, if you haven't ever had the CPU or Motherboard replaced by Toshiba then the situation is not the same.
