Could not confirm origin of this issue. Luckily with recent package updates,
problems seem to be resolved.
Possibly of interest is that upon googling, I found that another user did
experience similar rt61 wifi connectivity issues with the 3.2.0-18 kernel
(http://onubuntu.blogspot.com.au/2012/03/upgrading-to-ubuntu-precise-pangolin.html).
However given that I could not provide log files in a timely manner, and that
package updates appear to have solved this problem, I am marking this bug as
invalid.
