You mention that there were some hardware errors, I assume you saw this
in dmesg or /var/log/kern.log? Please paste them.
Also FYI, fakeraid is not any faster than mdadm since both are pure
software raid. mdadm is much more reliable and better supported. The
only advantage fakeraid has is that you can dual boot with windows.
