Followed these instructions for Bug 956845 - "The latest v3.3 kernel is now available. Can you test this latest kernel, which is available from: http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.3-precise/";
The "paging request" error message persists at boot-up, and VirtualBox now complains "kernel driver not installed" because of the new kernel and the fact that I blew away DKMS (see old notes). I'll leave it this way until new ideas emerge.
