** Description changed:

  This won't be a great bug report because the computer is bricked whenever I 
put it though the ordinary
  boot procedure.  What happens is that it reports a kernel taint and then 
panics.  I reinstalled the OS twice
  today, and am getting the same problem.  I wouldn't rule out hardware 
problems, although the hard drive
  checks fine (and so the md5 sums in the install disk).
  
  I've been having trouble booting Ubuntu all year--the common thread is the 
'failed FPDMA queued' in the dmesg.
  Happens on an old Sahara table PC I have too, although it boots after some 
difficulty.
