** Description changed: This won't be a great bug report because the computer is bricked whenever I put it though the ordinary boot procedure. What happens is that it reports a kernel taint and then panics. I reinstalled the OS twice today, and am getting the same problem. I wouldn't rule out hardware problems, although the hard drive checks fine (and so the md5 sums in the install disk). I've been having trouble booting Ubuntu all year--the common thread is the 'failed FPDMA queued' in the dmesg. Happens on an old Sahara table PC I have too, although it boots after some difficulty. + + + From + https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/891859/+attachment/2600328/+files/dmesg.txt + + [ 0.000000] ------------[ cut here ]------------ + [ 0.000000] WARNING: at /build/buildd/linux-3.0.0/drivers/pci/dmar.c:634 warn_invalid_dmar+0x98/0xb0() + [ 0.000000] Hardware name: HP Pavilion dv4 Notebook PC + [ 0.000000] Your BIOS is broken; DMAR reported at address 0! + [ 0.000000] BIOS vendor: Hewlett-Packard; Ver: F.31; Product Version: F.31 + [ 0.000000] Modules linked in: + [ 0.000000] Pid: 0, comm: swapper Not tainted 3.0.0-12-generic #20-Ubuntu + [ 0.000000] Call Trace: + [ 0.000000] [<c10478e2>] warn_slowpath_common+0x72/0xa0 + [ 0.000000] [<c12b24f8>] ? warn_invalid_dmar+0x98/0xb0 + [ 0.000000] [<c12b24f8>] ? warn_invalid_dmar+0x98/0xb0 + [ 0.000000] [<c1047972>] warn_slowpath_fmt_taint+0x32/0x40 + [ 0.000000] [<c12b24f8>] warn_invalid_dmar+0x98/0xb0 + [ 0.000000] [<c17e2c05>] check_zero_address+0x57/0x12b + [ 0.000000] [<c12f2fa7>] ? acpi_get_table_with_size+0x59/0xb3 + [ 0.000000] [<c17e2ceb>] detect_intel_iommu+0x12/0x78 + [ 0.000000] [<c17c1f3c>] pci_iommu_alloc+0x35/0x5a + [ 0.000000] [<c17cd4dd>] mem_init+0xe/0x26d + [ 0.000000] [<c17d8388>] ? __alloc_bootmem_node_nopanic+0x72/0x93 + [ 0.000000] [<c1518c98>] ? printk+0x2d/0x2f + [ 0.000000] [<c17da169>] ? page_cgroup_init_flatmem+0x8f/0xbc + [ 0.000000] [<c17bc5b2>] start_kernel+0x1a1/0x358 + [ 0.000000] [<c17bc3a2>] ? pass_bootoption.constprop.2+0xe2/0xe2 + [ 0.000000] [<c17bc0a9>] i386_start_kernel+0xa9/0xaf + [ 0.000000] ---[ end trace a7919e7f17c0a725 ]--- ProblemType: Bug DistroRelease: Ubuntu 11.10 Package: linux-image-3.0.0-12-generic 3.0.0-12.20 ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 3.0.0-12.20-generic 3.0.4 Uname: Linux 3.0.0-12-generic i686 NonfreeKernelModules: wl AlsaVersion: Advanced Linux Sound Architecture Driver Version 1.0.24.
