Dave-B, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better.
This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in
it recently. As you noted this was fixed in a newer kernel. In order to
backport the patch that fixed the issue, a kernel bisect would need to
be performed to identify which patch specifically fixed it. Could you
please perform a bisect following http://www.kernel.org/doc/local/git-
quick.html#bisect ?
