Hello Till Kamppeter Thanks for your emails concerning my Printer. I am sorry that I could not access my first Bugs Report when sending a follow up Report to you. I have concerntration and short term memory loss at times, owing to my disability, and so find following long and detailed notes difficult .
Following your email to me on 18 March suggesting that I contact the developers of Gutenprint Software, this I did and enclose a copy of the response that I received from Gernot Hassenpflug on this issue. From what I understand he mentions that Canon have produced drivers for a Canon IP 1600 Printer for Mac Operating Systems. This I would imagine would be no use when using Ubuntu 11.10 Software. Also, I gather that Canon do not have any drivers for an IP 1600 Printer using Linux Operating Systems. It seems that Gernot Hassenpflug has founda supporting mechanism for this model of printer which he has not written into Gutenprint yet and he has not got a printer to test it on, if I have understood him correctly. His response is rather technical for a non IT technical expert. I thought that Gernot Hassenpflug's response might be of interest to you. Thanks again for your help. Unfortunately, there does not seem to be any support for the Canon iP1600 for linux by Canon. We have removed the support in gutenprint 5.2.8pre1. Explanation: Some early models of the MP, i and iP series used a different and as yet unsupported protocol, based on ESC (z command, rather than the usual raster format used in gutenprint now. I did not notice this until after 5.2.7, and in 5.2.8pre1 these models have been removed and added to the NEWS file with a note that the protocol is unsupported. Luckily, Canon produced linux drivers for some of these models, so it is still possible to use them, but not currently with gutenprint. Doing a search on the website for Canon Europe, several other models are supported under MacOSX. I did find work on supporting this protocol on the web, but have not had the time to add a new protocol to gutenprint yet, nor do I yet have one of these models for testing. For reference, here the list of models I have analysed and found to use this unsupported format (from the NEWS file): 7) The following printer models were either not added, or removed, as they cannot currently be supported, even experimentally, owing to an as-yet unknown command format /../: Canon PIXMA i250 * Canon PIXMA i320 Canon PIXMA i350 Canon PIXMA iP1000 * Canon PIXMA iP1200 Canon PIXMA iP1300 Canon PIXMA iP1500 * Canon PIXMA iP1600 Canon PIXMA iP1700 Canon PIXMA iP1800 * Canon PIXMA iP1900 * Canon PIXMA iP2200 * Canon PIXMA iP2500 * Canon PIXMA iP2600 * Canon PIXMA MP5 Canon PIXMA MP10 Canon PIXMA MP55 Canon PIXMA MP110 Canon PIXMA MP130 * marks those printers for which I could find Canon linux drivers. There may be others.
