An update on the situation: To my understanding the intention is
definitely not to kill workspaces (and they should be fixed for
keyboards as well now). The thing is that the current ws switcher button
in the launcher is highly dangerous to novice users. I've on two
different occasions watched family members being "trapped" in it, unable
to figure out how to get out.

I wrote a proposal on the unity-dev list on how to do a long term
solution of the more general problem of giving access to some of the
