Theoretically, yes.  They are pretty common in the robotics and 3D
printer communities.  I have one here (somewhere).

However the USB connector on an arduino is just a USB serial port, using
the common FTDI chip if I remember correctly.  So, you can probably test
just as effectively with a USB to serial port converter.

I've not seen my Arduino clone hang Ubuntu, but I generally use it with
a Ubuntu 10.04.3 LTS machine, all my Lubuntu testing is in virtual
machines right now.  If I find my Arduino clone in the pile of other
"interesting" electronics stuff, and dig out a spare old PC to install
Lubuntu on, I'll test that combination.
