I believe, since unity-greeter's configuration was moved from 
unity-greeter.conf to gsettings, you will have to change the settings in 
gsettings.
the lightdm user has a home directory in /var/lib/lightdm
To change the settings, you will have to run dconf-editor as the lightdm user.
I don't know who came up with the switch to gsettings from the config files. I 
don't see the use case for it, only the problems/difficulties it creates.
