Martin: The instructions you linked to work without the HCI_BACKLIGHT patch to the kernel? Interesting. Have you tried it without passing acpi_backlight=vendor to see if the acpi backlight works as well? What about writing values other than 7?
The way that toshiba_acpi currently handles the backlight ends up with something virtually identical to what the bios is doing when the backlight is changed via the acpi_video backlight interface, at least on the Tecra R840.
