Martin: Thanks for gathering all the data. I'm hesitating on the solution from comment #30 because writing to HCI_BACKLIGHT seems to sometimes cause the machine to lock up, and because it's only a partial fix (acpi_video backlight still doesn't work). I'm hoping we can do better, when I have a little more time to look into this. Fwiw, most of the solutions posted on the other bug trackers are variations of what I used in comment #30.
