I'm curious if this issue isn't related, or even the same as, issue 117366 (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/117366), in that the proper restricted-modules package was *not* upgraded from -15 to -16. This was the case with me, and once I manually did 'sudo apt-get install linux-restricted-modules-2.6.20-16-generic' & restarted, wireless started working for me with the -16 kernel. It depends on whether the wireless drivers listed in this bug are in the restricted-modules package or not, of course!
