Regarding the regression tag, the user had commented:

"I should note that currently I'm unable to bring up X entirely with the
intel driver. Too bad I didn't make a note of which upgrade this started
with."

This sounds like the user had a working system, then updated some
(undetermined) packages, and then this GPU lockup began happening.

A more recent comment from the reporter indicates he's been having
further troubles with testing:

"@Bryce, this really is a messy one: I've so far dissected three
overlapping issues (Bug #926007, Bug #926012 and Bug #926028) which have
hindered my attempts to assist in debugging the one I originally laid
down in this report. :)"

i855 is not officially supported in Ubuntu any longer, so feel free to
close this report, and I'll direct the reporter to contact upstream
directly for further troubleshooting advice.
