This bug reared it's head for me when upgrading from 11.10 to 12.04 x86_32 this 
week. 
I found that by adding a mount for each shared drive you want to connect to eg.
//server/kids /media/kids smbfs username=kids,password=kids 0 0 
to your /etc/fstab and reloading with sudo mount -a each time you change 
/etc/fstab is a temporary work around.
