NOTE: If the PDF file (attached to comment #1) is printed directly with
   lpr AcrobatTestImage.pdf
then it prints fine.   But if that file is opened with acroread and printed 
from acroread, it is degraded.

If CUPS is the culprit, then acroread must be either using a different
API than the 'lpr' command, or else it is sending different bits than
are in the .pdf file.
