oh well, just found the answer on another bug report :)
perhaps it could help others. using:
sudo amixer, PCM 0 had a 0% sound level (no idea how it got there
though). using alsa mixer, increased volume and now it works! (for a
newbie, i guess its a little wired that the GDM volume displayed is not
the only controllable volume. newbies and average users don't know about
alsamixer)
anyways, works for me, please ignore my entry!
