This machine previouskt had Ubuntu 11.04 installed. Hibernate worked,
even when using the 'sleep' button on the Microsoft keyboard.

I wiped the hard drive and performed a fresh, single-boot intall of
Xubuntu 12.04.

When selecting from xfce4-panel 4.8.6 "Hibernate", the following pop-up
window occurs...

Per your instruction, I upgraded the kernel to:

image-3.4.0-030400-generic-pae_3.4.0-030400.201205210521_i386.deb

Then I ran...

"charlie@garagebox:~$ dpkg --list | grep linux-image

charlie@garagebox:~$ uname -mrsn
Linux garagebox 3.4.0-030400-generic-pae i686"

The failure still occurs.

Oddly, selecting "Suspend" will cause the computer to suspend. "Lock
Screen", "Reboot", "Shutdown", and "Log out" all work.

Any help appreciated.
