I too have been following this bug quite closely for sometime. I am on 12.04 now and still using some crazy work-arounds to get my modem working. I use a ZTE modem and I think that this issue might not be specific to Huawei modem. The work-arounds I use are: 1) Remove the default modemmanager and install modemmanager_0.4+git.20110124t203624.00b6cce-2ubuntu1 2) Insert the USB modem before booting up Ubuntu.
