As far as i'm concerned this issue goes well beyond being specific to a particular wireless Ralink chipset, also affects Intel and possibly other chipsets as well which means the issue is on the software side. Therefore it would be pointless to try out a mainstream kernel.
I wouldn't rule out Network Manager as being a possible cause (it is under version 1.0). With so many kernel updates coming out for Ubuntu 12.04 recently if it was a driver issue then it would most likely be fixed by now.
