You tell that you can print if the server is the newer Windows 7 and you
get an error on the Windows box if it is the older Windows XP. Looks
like that something got fixed in Windows.

If you need Windows for something, you should perhasp use the newer
Windows 7. Or you connect the printer to a non-Windows machine and share
it out with CUPS/IPP or Samba/SMB so that the Windows machine has
access.

Have you already tried to connect the printer directly to a Linux
machine? Or to the USB port of a router or of a NAS?
