@Tom: I made that change and tested it and everything checked out like you expected. When connected to VPN ppp0 file did not exist, and VPN nameserver addresses were not present in /etc/resolv.conf but were present in /var/run/nm-dns-dnsmasq.conf. Hope that helps. Let me know if there's anything else I can do, but it looks like one bugs down.
