I upgraded to 3.2.0-24 and everything seems to be working fine still. I should probably have noted that I've added
options snd-hda-intel model=hp-dv5 to my alsa-base.conf to account for an issue where sound comes out of the speakers and the headphones when the headphones are plugged in. With that line in place, 3.2.0-25 and 3.4.0 both refuse to play sound from the speakers at all but will work with the headphones.
