thanks for the quick reply. I have reposted to the appropriate forum. In case it matters, I do want to emphasize that the *startup* sound worked when I first installed ubuntu, but none of the sound from any apps (rhythmbox, totem, etc) ever worked. I'm not sure if I can be elevated to bug status based on that, but I wanted to throw it out there. Sorry if I've misposted.
