OK, a brief update from the land of "trying to build a kernel in Ubuntu regression land for the first time": I built a kernel from the tag Ubuntu-2.6.39-0.1, and confirmed that the regression still happens there.
When I tried building from Ubuntu-2.6.39-0.0 (a logical step, no?), the build (actually, the pre-build command "fakeroot debian/rules clean") failed immediately with this error: debian/rules.d/0-common-vars.mk:12: *** first argument to `word' function must be greater than 0. Stop. So... now what?
