Hi, I can confirm that this bug exists in 12.04LTS release and that the workaround works as well.
I am currently trying to install Ubuntu Precise onto a old desktop with a SiS chipset and a Athlon XP CPU as well. Ubiquity would always crash just when the slideshow is loading up. A method to outright tell ubiquity to not show the slideshow would be a good workaround for this issue. Either that, or providing text install as well with the live CD.
