Update. This freeze of the desktop also seems to be related to wireless networking. It often freezes the desktop if I try to make a wifi connection. On the other hand, wireless broadband, either via the builtin sim card, or via bluetooth tether to cellphone, rarely if ever locks up the desktop so there seems to be a strong correlation of the desktop freezing with trying to make a wifi connection.
