Setting status to Fix Released:

In 12.04; there is a gconf key to not show the applet icon: /apps/nm-
applet/show-applet . Toggle this to false and the icon will not appear
in the panel.

In 12.10; it's going to be a similar key, but in gsettings instead
(since everything is migrating to there)
