The resulting file was so close to 4GiB that I doubt it was a coincidence. When copying files from DVD to hard disk, there were multiple _read_ errors, one for each file that couldn't be copied.
In addition to that, I've had trouble, in the past, with playing DVDs using Kaffeine under Kubuntu, though the particular DVDs I have at the moment seem to play okay. The DVDs played fine under Windoze. I've been having some difficulty replicating the problem now that I'm running Edgy and a 2.6.21.1 kernel. I'll drop back to an earlier (standard) kernel and let you know what happens ... The 2.6.21.1 kernel seems to use /dev/scd0 and /media/dvdrecorder now rather than having /dev/hda and /media/cdrom0 in /etc/fstab. Dropping back to 2.6.17-11-generic reverts to using /dev/hda, but doesn't allow me to replicate the problem. :-( Maybe it went away with the change to Edgy. Hmm... Since Dapper was a LTS release, you'll probably be interested in nailing this one, assuming it's real. I could try to reinstall Dapper. I do have space on the hard drive - a 2GiB partition down low and a 5GiB partition up high, but I'm not sure how to persuade Grub to let me boot to Edgy, Windoze or the newly (to be) installed Dapper. The manual page for grub is unhelpful and the (depleted) Texinfo documentation is no better. I'm sure I could install Dapper to use /dev/sda2 as /boot and /dev/sda7 as /, but I'm not sure I could then revert to booting Edgy and Windoze. Any suggestions? Maybe you could point me towards the rest of the Texinfo docs for Grub.
