According to OS X, the number of sectors is 312579695 in both diskutil (GPT) and fdisk (protective MBR), So, although the actual GPT contains the larger size, OS X diskutil respects the HPA and lists the smaller size.
So if I understood correctly, the problem here is that linux is not respecting the HPA and therefore confusing partitioning apps with 2 different sector numbers for the same disk?!
