Formatted partition and reinstalled Ubuntu 12.04 from scratch - fresh install from 12.04 CD.
Then applied updates with update manager. Followed system request to reboot machine after applying updates. Toggled precise-proposed updates ON and ran update manager again. Picked up a few more updates. Now the /proc/asound/card0/codec#0 starts with "Realtek 280" Still get no sound from speakers. Get sound with headphones when you plug them in. Let me know if you have enough information to proceed with the case.
