This bug appears to have gone now that I'm running 304.37-0ubuntu1~lucid~xup1 of the Nvidia driver. I installed this update a few days ago. (August 20, 2012). My guess is that it was an Nvidia- related regression which is now fixed. I haven't been using suspend for several nvidia-updates now so this version of the driver is only an bound on when the actual regression was fixed.
