2) I think is most elegantly handled using the aforementioned shell
scripting (comment #6). Because LIBGL_ALWAYS_SOFTWARE needs to be set
before compiz (opengl plugin) starts. To allow other apps to use
hardware acceleration while Unity can't, just unset
LIBGL_ALWAYS_SOFTWARE in unity itself, before spawning programs from the
launcher/dash.

4) Should not be solved using LLVMpipe. It should be discussed in bug
824099 instead.
