Yes, that is it. System information says "Kernel Linux 3.6.0-030600rc7-generic (i386)" But more importantly I have an X display again with this kernel.
(With updates later than quantal alpha 3, booting ended with the command line! And when I tried startx or xinit, they failed on "segmentation fault".)
