Yes, failure is after rebooting. But if you do not reboot it works ok.
How should I use depmod? Just sudo depmod have no effect, X fails to start.
My steps are:
1. X fails to start with "nvidia" driver.
2. Ctrl+Alt+F1
3. sudo /etc/init.d/kdm stop
4. Editing xorg.conf, "nvidia" -> "nv".
5. sudo /etc/init.d/kdm start
6. X starts!
So now I use "nv" and it's OK.
Video card: Nvidia GeForce 6600 GT.
I use sudo m-a a-i nvidia for building and installing kernel module.
I use kdm with KDE 3.5.7 repository for Kubuntu Feisty.
Here are my xorg.conf with driver "nvidia" and Xorg.0.log.
