Opening the dash in Ubuntu 12.10 takes about one second on my notebook equipped with an SSD, enough RAM and online search turned off. As a result, I try to avoid using the dash in my daily work-flow whenever possible. I don't know where most of the this time is spent, but llvmpipe may be a candidate.
