Thanks, Matthew, and no problem. :) For distinguishing the cases...I don't know of a way to do that. For any failed authentication, dbus returns the exception 'PermissionDeniedByPolicy', and with the patch, software-properties catches that. Maybe somewhere in dbus, a finer distinction could be found, but that's just speculation. What I know about this, I just learned at the time of going after this bug.
